Pine Plantation Communities: How Do We Begin to Manage for Plant Diversity?

چکیده

Conservation of biological diversity is becoming a flagship issue on public and private forests worldwide while productivity increases are demanded. As concern for diversity. maintenance escalates, increasing pressure is being placed on the forestry community to understand the effects of intensifying silvicuttural treatments on biodiversity and its sustainable management Intensity of management must increase to supply commodities demanded by the growing world population. Biodiversity conservation in.intensively managed forested regions will depend (at least partially) on species growing in tree plantations, their margins, streamside management zones,’ and right-of-ways. W&in the Southeast, pine plantation acreage is projected to dpubie by 2040, mainly replacing natural pine forests. Replacement and/or establishment of plantations occur through intensive harvesting, using herbtides and mechanical treatments, burning, planting closely-spaced genetically-improved seedlings, and often fertiliing. The singular or additive effects of ail these treatments are often assumed to limit plant species richness and diversity, yet liile has been documented to support or refute these assumptions. More indepth research is required by forest vegetation management scientists and other researchers from allied disciplines. To learn more about diversity changes following herbicide treatments for site preparation and release, I have led two teams in conducting both a region-&de research project at 13 locations in 7 states, and a study se&x in Central Georgia on 7 locations in 3 provinces. The foilowing generalizations ccme f%m the 6ndings cf these studies as v&i as frtim’other’s related research. . .

Are pine plantations valid tools for restoring Mediterranean forests? An assessment along abiotic and biotic gradients.

The ecological impacts of forest plantations are a focus of intense debate, from studies that consider plantations as "biological deserts" to studies showing positive effects on plant diversity and dynamics. This lack of consensus might be influenced by the scarcity of studies that examine how the ecological characteristics of plantations vary along abiotic and biotic gradients. Here we conduct...

Seasonal Nutrient Yield and Digestibility of Deer Forage from a Young Pine Plantation

Six classes of current herbaceous and woody forage were collected seasonally from a 5-yearold mixed loblolly (Pinus taeda) -shortleaf pine (Pinus echinata) plantation (in Texas) and subjected to nutrient analyses and nylon bag dry-matter digestion trials. Forages were most nutritious and digestible in the spring when tissues were succulent and growing rapidly. Browse leaves and twig tips were t...

Experimental Manipulation of Precipitation Affects Soil Nitrogen Availability in Semiarid Mongolian Pine (Pinus sylvestris var. mongolica) Plantation

Expected changes in precipitation over large regions of the world under global climate change will have profound effects on terrestrial ecosystems in arid and semiarid regions. To explore how changes in the amount of precipitation in the growing season would affect soil nitrogen (N) availability in a semiarid ecosystem, we established rainout shelters and irrigation systems by simulating 30% re...

Soil bacterial diversity in a loblolly pine plantation: influence of ectomycorrhizas and fertilization.

We studied the effect of ectomycorrhizas and fertilization on soil microbial communities associated with roots of 10-year-old loblolly pine. Ectomycorrhizas were identified using a combination of community terminal restriction fragment profiling and matching of individual terminal restriction fragments to those produced from ectomycorrhizal clones and sequences recovered from roots and sporocar...

Rapid Increases in Forest Understory Diversity and Productivity following a Mountain Pine Beetle (Dendroctonus ponderosae) Outbreak in Pine Forests

The current unprecedented outbreak of mountain pine beetle (Dendroctonus ponderosae) in lodgepole pine (Pinus contorta) forests of western Canada has resulted in a landscape consisting of a mosaic of forest stands at different stages of mortality. Within forest stands, understory communities are the reservoir of the majority of plant species diversity and influence the composition of future for...
